| NYC Restaurants |
[28 Dec 2009|12:48am] |
I'm going to NYC in a couple days, and I'd like some restaurant suggestions! I've been there a few times before and I've gone to (and loved!) these restaurants: HanGawi, Angelica Kitchen, Cafe Blossom, Bonobo's (didn't like that place that much though), Candle 79/Candle Cafe, Lula's Sweet Apothecary, Sacred Chow, Red Bamboo, Kate's Joint, Foodswings, TeaNY, Cafe Viva, and Maoz. Also been to other various Indian and Chinese restaurants but I can't remember the names.
I'll be staying in the Upper West Side for the first couple days, and then I'll be in Queens. Are there any restaurants I haven't been to yet that you'd recommend? I've never been to Queens before so I haven't been to any there! I want to try something new =) I'll be going to Ninja at some point - their vegetarian 5-course meal (Saizo) appears to be all vegan - has anyone had it?

| Horses and Autism |
[28 Dec 2009|12:26am] |
Hello all, So I know there is some conflicting views about Horse riding. I have recently been trying to wrap my head around domestication of animals and how I feel about it all on an idealistic level before then going to what I believe in a practical sense.
Anyways, I know a lot of people here have said things along the lines of horse riding is terrible, you have to break the horse, and it still falls under animal exploitation. Have any of you heard of, or seen the movie called The Horse Boy (Click here for the trailer).
I caught it a few nights ago while staying with a friend for Christmas. The friend (who is not veg*n at all) and her mother (also very not veg*n) were both avid horse riders and both lived on a farm for a great part of their lives. Anyways, this movie tells the story of a boy with autism who seems to have a special connection with animals, particularly horses. The family take the boy to Mongolia, where shamanism is the national religion, and where horse riding began, to see if they can help cure some of the aspects of the boy's autism that are troubling (potty-training and uncontrollable tantrums are the most tangible of these). The story is quite phenomenal and the results are stunning. Also, viewing of how horses are treated by many of the owners here make me not so sure I want to peg horse riding as animal exploitation.
Anyways I just wanted to see what you guys thought. Check the movie out if you get a chance.

| covington/cincinnati airport food |
[26 Dec 2009|03:36pm] |
|
I have a layover in a couple weeks at the cincinnati/covington airport in Kentucky. Does anyone perchance know if there are any good places there for me to eat? I have a long, long flight before that, and I won't be getting back home to Salt Lake until about 8 that night (I get into CVG around 4 and sit for a few hours), so I was hoping to be able to eat during my layover. I won't really be able to pack food for the flight, other than chocolate, or I would just do that. I just want some peace of mind (or to tell my mom to have a big chipotle burrito waiting for me when she picks me up!)

| Save Cornelius! |
[26 Dec 2009|05:04am] |
Hello, veganpeople! I come with a Christmas surprise. His name is Cornelius.
Cornelius was found yesterday evening, Christmas Eve, in fact. He was loose in the middle of a busy road and covered in gasoline and demodex mange. Naturally, we pulled over and picked him up. He is now clean and comfortable in my utility room.
Unfortunately for Cornelius, we are renters and our landlord does not allow pit bulls. This pretty much means that if we do not find a rescue for him to go to before our landlord finds out, we will be forced to take him to animal control. We don't really want to do this. Can you help? Do you know of anyone who can?
Cornelius is located in Orlando, Florida, but we are willing to travel pretty far to make sure he's safe, even set up an out of state transport. He's a very friendly, enthusiastic boy. He doesn't appear to be terribly reactive towards dogs and cats, but he has only seen them while out on walks. All he wants to do is snuggle and play with squeaky toys. He looks to be about 8 months old and is unaltered.
Here are some pictures. Be warned, the demodex covers his entire body. He seems in good spirits in spite of how itchy and uncomfortable he is!( look under here for an itchy dog )
this will be cross posted, so sorry if you see it more than once. Feel free to post his story wherever you please

| one of those annoying "omg, where can I eat?!" posts |
[26 Dec 2009|12:28am] |
first off, I'd post in vegan_ny, but it isn't very active.
okay, omni family is visiting on sunday and we are going to the Statue of liberty/eliis island, grabbing a quick snack, then heading to rockafeller plaza to see the tree, then either eating there or back to prospect heights (where I live).
my sister is pretty short tempered and gets angry when I make where we eat an issue. They want to eat in an omni restaurant (no possibility to sneak fake meat or something here). It can't be out of the way (like, farther than a 10 minute walk) from the alloted tourist palces*.
Any ideas? I don't know 30 rock area very well, and so far have only found blockheads as an option for the big meal or eating in park slope at pizza plus.
anything is really really helpful, especially for a snack place near where we would get off the statue of liberty ferry.
*by this, I mean if I make it "difficult" she'll just say "that's it, we are eating at the burger/pizza place right here and you can have a salad or pick the cheese out of your meal!"

As it's my favourite soy milk, I thought you'd all be interested in hearing that Bonsoy has been recalled - in Australia, at least - due to dangerously high levels of iodine. Link here, text below cut: ( from ausfoodnews.com.au )

Do you struggle to wait to drink tea or coffee after iron rich meals?
What about soda or sparkling water after eating calcium rich foods?
I force myself to wait for at least an hour, it is annoying at times. Should I pay that much attention to it?

| Favorite Articles/Links/Etc.? |
[24 Dec 2009|11:42pm] |

My husband's mom eagerly showed me her copy of Food Inc. today and told me how it ALMOST got her to "join your side". I didn't go into my feelings on the movie but I'm happy it at least got her thinking. The only thing she said that's holding her back is that she believes you need meat to be healthy. Now, obviously that's not true so I'd like to send her links and articles backing that up. If anyone could give me suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. However, I don't want things from anywhere she could claim was biased (like PETA or a specific animal rights organization)and I don't want things that'll scare her either. She already likes a lot of vegan food to the point where her and her husband will eat my cooking and come out with me to vegan restaurants. So I feel like shes close to being able to go all the way, if she just could be convinced on the health aspect. I've given her recipes and cooked for them in the past which while they've appreciated it, hasn't been enough to get them to at least finally give up meat. I'd love any tips or advice for helping people transition along with articles that might help. Thanks!

| Eggs? |
[24 Dec 2009|12:43pm] |
So I am vegan due to environmental, ethical, and moral reasons, one of my morals being that we should be way more involved in the production of our food. My parents just asked me if I would eat eggs if they were raising their own chickens. We live out in the sticks, so the chickens would be free range there would be no hormones and they would live off of grass and organic grains and I know that my parents are all for the ethical treatment of animals, they just also believe that humans were not meant to live on a completely animal free diet. So part of me is saying, "yes, eat the eggs, they are from happy, healthy chickens!" and part of me is saying, "No! Those eggs could be little chicken babies!" I am at a loss for what to tell them. I love being vegan, but I sometimes think that if I was raising all of my own food, including chicken, pork, and/or cattle, that I would become omnivorous.
So, my question to you is, what would you do in this situation and what is your argument for or against eating the eggs and possibly the chicken?
Also, I would like to add that my parents would never force me to eat something that I was not comfortable eating and they are actually extremely supportive and cook and eat vegan meals with me when I am home. We actually tend to bond over finding and cooking new vegan recipes or "veganizing" old family recipes.
I appreciate the time you take to answer this question!
(To the mods: I am really new at tagging posts, so if I do this way wrong, please feel free to edit/moderate!)

| Books on UK Farming |
[24 Dec 2009|02:21pm] |
|
This community has been recommended to me by the lovely friend_of_tofu, so here is my first post. :-) I have tried finding the answer to the question below both by Google and the community tags, so I thought I would ask.
Can anyone recommend any good books about UK farming from an environmental impact angle and has a scientific basis?
Thanks!

hi guys,
i am trying to find a video that was posted here a while back. it doesn't seem to be in the "video" tags. it was a speech given by a veg*n doctor. one thing i distinctly remember was that he showed what human blood looked like after consuming meat. it was half fat.
thanks

Eagles honor Michael Vick with Ed Block Courage Award.
So making a shitload of money after getting out of jail and refusing invites to advocate for the dogs you harmed is what passes for courage these days. Good to know.
Ironically, this award is in honor of an advocate for abused children.

ASPCA - betrays the animals they are supposed to protect by Sloane Quealey
November 13th Oreo, a pit bull mix, was hailed as a miracle dog when she survived being hurled off a Brooklyn rooftop last summer. She had two broken legs and a broken rib. Her owner was arrested on cruelty charges, and Oreo, a dark brown dog with white paws and forelegs and a white stripe down her forehead, was nursed back to health. Dozens of people expressed interest in adopting her. They will not get the chance. After overseeing her recovery, the ASPCA put Oreo to death on Friday, November 13, 2009 at 3:00 pm. After sitting in a cage in isolation, with very limited human interaction for weeks, wearing an elizabethan collar 24 hours a day, seven days a week, not because she needed it, but, because it made her easier for Victoria Wells the ASPCA’s unlicensed animal behaviorist to handle her, and after a reputable sanctuary offered to take her and assume all legal liability for her, Oreo was executed by the ASPCA. The ASPCA used Oreo to make money and then in order to save face killed her because if another sanctuary rehabilitated her it would have been more proof that they make decisions that are not in the best interest of the animals.
December 15th The deadly duo (Ed Sayres & Victoria Wells) struck again when they put to death Max another pitbull. ( Read more... )
x-posted
Edit: Proof has been asked for; the woman who wrote the article says: "I know these things to be true from workers at the ASPCA and their conversations with Ed Sayres." Pretty sad that I have to defend this to a community of vegans, but Sloane has no vested interest in antagonizing the ASPCA; the ASPCA has a vested interest in donations (including nearly half a million dollars US annually for Sayres http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=3286).

| Wiki Veganica : my holiday present to all vegans |
[22 Dec 2009|09:55pm] |
Hi folks! You may remember several months ago I posted about a project I was working on. Sadly one of the people doing it left, which made us grind to a halt (since he had all the code on his servers). Anyway, after an additional team member and lots of hard work I present to you all:
Wiki Veganica!
There's not much there now, but please sign up and edit! Wikipedia was not built in a day!
If you would like to work on this project more in depth than an average user, please let me know (especially any tech oriented folks, graphic designers, and highly organized persons). Also if creating and editing pages is too hard/too much work for you but you have things you think should be in there (letters from companies about if things are vegan, well-researched info, etc.), please also send those my way!
I have wanted a community-edited vegan wiki for years so now here we go!

| mini tv character victories |
[22 Dec 2009|09:50pm] |
Does anyone else get excited when real life actors have an effect on their tv persona? By this I mean when an actor uses their pull to effect the way their character in shown to promote veg*n lifestyles? I could only think of vegetarian examples, but here are some off the top of my head:
* Casey Kasem (vegan in real life) refusing to voice Shaggy until the show made him a strict vegetarian. * Dr. Temperance Brennen on the TV show Bones (Emily DeSchanel-vegan in real life) turning vegetarian. * In a recent episode, Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein - vegetarian in real life) on House comes home from a stressful day and her boyfriend made her eggplant parm.
can anybody think of any others?
